The Theory


Philosophy: "Architecture spaces embody the chaos and continuity of the people that use it." 


Derived from the work of Zaha Hadid, focusing on the Maxxi Museum. Zaha Hadid's work aims to embody the life of the people that use her buildings; common themes of fluidity and mayhem due to inclusion of multiple perspectives, are evident in her architecture. 


The chosen phrases and shapes: 

Dynamic and Interactive Space - just as students and staff at a school interact and both social and academic aspects remain dynamic, the shape flows but is constantly changing direction, and linked with each component at unexpected points. This encapsulates the life of the people that will use this building. 


Fragmented Geometry Embodies Chaos - a combination of shapes of similar geometry but differing in size, height and angles, the shape represents the chaos of student and staff life.

Draft Lumion Environment and Moving Element


Moving Element: one room of the building is raised and lowered to allow access to the second level terrace of the Squarehouse and into the School of Architecture.




The Moving Element - Final



Entrance building linking architecture school to Squarehouse. The outer facade of this component is glass, hence moving down and up changes the view of the students/staff from inside the building. This represents the continuity of the building and learning environment between the architecture school and Squarehouse. The component is still part of the school but as it lowers, also becomes attached to the Squarehouse. This embodies the notion that learning architecture continues outside of the classroom and school.

Aerial View: Connection to Squarehouse and NIDA Performing Arts Centre, stretches over Anzac Parade. 


Inspiration from roof details of Maxxi Museum by Zaha Hadid. The columns accentuate the fluidity of the structure whilst the curves highlight the dynamic changing of direction. 


Perspective View. (Gallery [front left], studio spaces [bottom right] and library [back left] can be seen. All spaces are connected and organised in a stream, similar to the open layout of Maxxi Museum. The studio spaces and lecture theatres are placed in the triangular prism structures to encourage the "chaos" of interactive/open learning. Students can share ideas, presenting multiple perspectives. 


Staircases inspired by Zaha Hadid's staircases in Maxxi Museum. A fluid yet dynamic form which accentuates the overall shape of the building. 


Entry into roof top level of NIDA Performing Arts Centre. 


Main Entry, ground level beside Squarehouse. Large Swinging Entrance door.
